Hi Neil,

As we have become more and more "budget conscious" about our shopping, I have found that Zeytinia is actually pretty reasonably priced. And their summer produce is very good, much of it apparently local.

To a certain extent we have become seasonal shoppers, and Zeytinia is on our "summer" list.

Neil,

At the start of reading the article it seemed so old-fashioned and restricting to one's schedule, but then realizing all the positives on a family, health and society level make it brilliant.

Once your child is older you only wish you had more time to spend with them, to talk, give guidance, eat well -share and set a good example.

I wonder how it would be perceived if a parent came in even if just once a week to take their child to lunch, even if it was to the nearby deli (I would not want to eat the school lunch).

Europe is one thing - Tokyo, Japan is truly fascinating in this sense due to the small living spaces - people shop for what they want on a daily basis. Convenience stores are clean, bright and change product shelf-mix DURING the day to meet the needs of the community. And were it not for fast food you would almost never see a fat Japanese person but alas the westernization of Japan has emerged in this less than helpful area.

And the neighborhood residents acting as the recycling police in Tokyo are fierce. Again space (or lack thereof) is the driver.

Hi Neil, I like your blog! I have also thought long and hard about Swiss mini-fridges as I have a cousin outside of Zurich and have visited the family regularly for thirty some years. Whenever I am there we eat royally out of this college dorm size fridge. They have no car and, everyday, there is the continual conversation regarding the status of the bread, the yoghurt, the cheese and what is for dinner. So "fresh" is key. On the down side of kids eating lunch at home, my cousin's wife (who is Czech)felt trapped by the Swiss custom. She could not work because she had to be home at lunchtime. I guess Czechs had different lunch customs. The other thing that struck me was the very involved waste management program separating trash from recycling from composting. So great thought went into food that came into the apartment as well as trash that went out of the apartment. Jana
